Mammootty's real name is Muhammad Kutty Panaparambil Ismail. His fans fondly call him Mammookka. Mammootty debuted in his first film Anubhavangal Paalichakal in the year 1971 when he was about 20 years old. Over the last 50 years in cinema, he has acted in over 400 films, not just in Malayalam but also Tamil, Telugu, Kannada Hindi and English. Mammootty is a qualified lawyer.
He has won three National Film Awards for Best Actor, seven Kerala State Film Awards and thirteen Film fare Awards South. The Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri for his contributions to the arts in 1998 ( India's fourth highest civilian award). He has also been honoured with doctorate degrees from the University of Kerala (2010) and the University of Calicut in December (2010)
Mammotty's parents are Ismail and Fatima, he was their eldest son. He has two younger brothers, Ibrahimkutty and Zakariah, and three younger sisters, Ameena, Sauda and Shafina. Mammotty married Sulfath in 1979 and has a daughter, Surumi (born 1982), and a son Dulquer Salmaan (born 1986). He resides in Kochi, Ernakulam with his family.
Mammootty was the first Malayalam actor to play a double role. Since then he has played a double role in 8 more films.
Mammootty has the most number of Best Actor Filmfare Awards South by a Malayali actor.
