He made his acting debut in 2002 with a leading role in Ranjith's romantic drama Nandanam, a commercial success. Over the last 2 decades, he acted in more than 100 films in a variety of roles. Prithviraj debuted as a singer in 2009, for the film Puthiya Mukham. Since then he has sung over 11 songs. Prithviraj made his directorial debut in 2019 with the film Lucifer, starring Mohanlal.
He is an alumnus of Sainik School, Kazhakootam and Bhavan's Senior Secondary School, Kodunganoor. Later he studied for a bachelor's degree in Information Technology at the University of Tasmania in Australia.
He has also won several awards, notably a National Film Award in 2011 for the Film Indian Rupee. Three Kerala State Film Awards, including two best actor awards in 2006 and 2012, best film in 2011.
Prithviraj was born to the actors Sukumaran and Mallika Sukumaran. His brother Indrajith Sukumaran is also an actor. He married BBC India reporter Supriya Menon on 25th April 2011. They have a daughter together Alankrita Menon Prithviraj ( born in 2014).
Lucifer his first film as a director, became the highest-grossing Malayalam film ever at the time earning more than ₹200 crore. Prithviraj was the only person to win the title of "Mr LA Fest" twice at the Annual Inter-School arts festival hosted by Loyola School, Thiruvananthapuram.
